March 2012

Well March has been another busy month for me in my role as Youth and Children’s Intern at Ebe… and time flies when you’re having fun! I have had opportunities to lead Bible studies for my home group and Pick & Mix this month, as extra tasks to my general work. This has been really encouraging and has taught me a lot. I have also been involved more with The Word on Sunday mornings and I have been planning for another Girlz Group and preparing to start a Youth Alpha course. So here’s a little more about these activities.

The Word
My first month’s tasks as part of the team of volunteers for The Word have been very interesting. I have been praying about and planning the Bible teaching for the spring and summer terms this year. I have met with the young people on a number of occasions within a youth group setting and I have been able to get a bit of an idea of their personalities and where they each are on their personal journeys with the Lord. This has really helped me to decide what topics we should be looking at each week. I have felt lead to focus on some of the basic foundations of Christianity and some principles of Christian living and discipleship. It is my hope that looking at these within a relatively short space of time will give the young people an opportunity to think once again, about where they are personally in their relationship with God. My prayer for these young people is that they will each have personal encounters with God, that they will seek Him whole-heartedly and that they will desire to know Him on a deeper, more personal level. The following is the plan of teaching for the rest of this academic year. I ask that you will keep a copy of this plan somewhere and pray for the young people each week, in relation to the topic in hand. Please also pray that the leaders will have wisdom in their teaching and will be lead by the Holy Spirit.

 Youth Alpha
We are starting a Youth Alpha course on the 22nd of April which will last for nine weeks. We have invited a mix of young people from The Rock and from TGI Lates. Some of these young people have already made a commitment and others have not. So I’m sure we will have a good mix of questions and responses. Myself, Claire Stoney and Jack Teasdale are running the course and we will hopefully be having some people from Ebe coming in to do some of the talks for us too. There are about eight young people who have shown an interest in attending the course. It will run on Sunday evenings alongside The Rock from 7-9pm, so they will get a chance to mix with the people who go to The Rock for games and snacks. This has all come about quite quickly but it seems to be great timing because we have been able to invite some of the young people who have registered to go to Hill House Camp. This means that, if they come, they could potentially continue on with learning more about Jesus through the summer as well… great news!

·         Please pray that we get a good number of young people sign-up to this course and that God prepares each individual’s heart in the run up to the start.
·         Pray also for us as leaders, that we will have wisdom to answer questions and to deliver the content in a way that is relevant to the young people.

Girlz Group
I am also going to be starting another Girlz Group with a different set of girls at Orchard School. This will begin on Thursday 26th April. It will be the same course, running for six weeks and the same people will be helping me to run it. I have given the names of a few girls from TGI Lates who would benefit from being in the sessions and so I am praying that this will be a really great link between the stuff going on at church and the school. These particular girls have also been invited to Youth Alpha, so this will hopefully form a bit of a circle of support and input for them.

·         Please pray that the girls who will be invited will choose to come along to the sessions, as it’s a voluntary group.
·         Pray that I will be able to share more of my personal story with them and that this impacts upon them as individuals.

I really appreciate your support in prayer and in practical ways and I wanted to say a big thank you to all of you who do so. I also really appreciate hearing any feedback you might have about the work I’m doing or if you feel that God is speaking to me through you… so feel free to speak to me anytime about anything or to leave comments here on the blog!

Bless you all, Kate xxx

February 2012

This month has been a full one for me on a personal level as well as in relation to my work as an intern. February has seen the advent of my 30th birthday, something of which I was a little apprehensive about before Christmas! However, I embraced the celebrations with passion and really feel that I am embarking on a new chapter of my life. My prayer for my 30th birthday was that God would use and work through me to advance His kingdom and purposes over the next ten years and that whatever He wants me to do or wherever He wants me to go, I am a willing servant… I really feel that I have been given a new lease of spiritual life for a new season! Thanks to all of you who helped to celebrate my birthday in whatever way, shape or form and thanks for all the wonderful cards, presents and messages I received… I can truly say that my 30th birthday has been the best one of my life so far!! Here are some pictures from my fancy dress party which had the theme 'eighties children's tv, film and book characters'... you may recognise some people!

My Holiday

My very generous and loving Mother took me to Egypt for one week as my birthday present. We stayed in a beautiful hotel in Sharm El Sheikh and spent a good amount of time relaxing and sunning ourselves by the pool. However, even in Egypt on holiday, it quickly became evident that God desired to use us to spread the gospel and to show His love to Muslims and Christians alike. We had many opportunities to speak to people about our faith and to spend time listening to people sharing stories of their lives. The Holy Spirit clearly paved a way for us to have open conversations and to build friendships which we have continued whilst at home in England. There were three particular Muslim men with whom we made friendships and who were clearly inspired by our words and lives. They are Mohamed, Saleh and Karim. My Mum and I continue to pray for them, that God would challenge them and reveal Himself to them. It would be great if you could join us in praying for them too, that the Lord would lead them to salvation for His glory!

 Girlz Group

So last month, I left you with the news that Kelly (PCSO) and I would be taking the girls from Girlz Group at Orchard, to Pizza Hut. This was a very successful trip and the girls stuffed themselves with pizza, pasta, salad and garlic bread which was all paid for by the school. It was great to see the girls outside of the school context and they were certainly more relaxed with each other and with us. A couple of them started to open up about boyfriends they currently have, which gave us a very good insight into their self worth and their relationships with other people. We were able to offer some very practical advice to them about relationships. Some concerns were raised around one girl in particular who told us she was going to meet her new, older boyfriend for the second time, but was going alone. We advised her to take a friend with her and Kelly was able to pass this information on to appropriate mentors within the school for further guidance from them. This will also be an issue I am able to continue speaking with them about, by building it into future sessions I have with them. Praise God that these girls feel comfortable enough to share with us information about such delicate issues and that I have an opportunity to advise them and pray for them on these things!

·       Please pray that this openness continues and that the girls are willing to listen to and accept the advice they hear.
·         Please pray for protection for these vulnerable girls from relationships or situations that will be damaging to them.
·        Pray that each of these girls becomes fully aware of how precious they are to God and how much they are worth.
Girls' Lunch Club

Unfortunately, as Kelly has been out of the country since I came back from Egypt, the lunch time girls club with members of GIRLZ Group has only ran once. There were some problems with trying to find a space in which to run the group and these were not resolved before Kelly left for her holiday. So for now, the lunch club has been postponed until after Easter when things should be back to normal.

·      Please pray for the girls over the Easter holidays, that they will somehow come in contact with what Easter really means.
·          Pray that the momentum of relationship building will not be lost while we are not meeting with the girls.

The Word

This month, I have also started as a leader at The Word, the Sunday morning youth group. I will be leading the session for one week in every four and I will also be responsible for planning each term’s overall theme or topic for the Bible teaching. Ben Whitnall and Ian Powell are also leaders and we met last week to discuss possible changes and developments for The Word. One of the decisions we made was that for the First Sunday monthly services at Ebe, the young people will remain in the service with the rest of the congregation. We will be encouraging them to sit together and to actively participate in worship, as well as encouraging them to pray for and minister to each other when they want to respond to the speaker’s message or to the worship. You may even see the young people involved with some aspect of the service like; being in the worship team, doing the technical support or doing something to contribute to the content of the service. We’re very excited about seeing our young people integrate more into church on Sunday mornings and we want to encourage you to make them feel at home and welcome and to even find out more about them as individuals by having a conversation with them during coffee! The coming term’s theme for the Bible teaching is yet to be decided, but we have some very interesting discussion topics raised by the young people themselves including; the relevance of the Bible today, homosexuality and why men should be the head over a woman… just a little challenging then!!

·         Please pray for divine guidance on what topics we should be teaching from the Bible each term.
·         Pray that we as leaders will be passionate about teaching from the Bible and that we are able to be role models who inspire the young people to see the Bible as a fresh and exciting guide book which brings us life and growth.
·     Please pray for the 30 young people we have attending The Word, that they will each have personal encounters with the living God and that their relationships with Him will become strong and everlasting.

January 2012

I am excited to be telling you all the news from the first month of my intern year… There has been an awful lot that has happened already and things seem to be picking up momentum and growing quite organically!! This month I’ve been mainly involved with; Girlz Group and TGI Lates.

The Girlz Group logo... designed by the girls!
Girlz Group

I met with Kelly, the resident Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) at Orchard School back in December to plan some dates and ideas for running a group for girls at Orchard who have little or no self-esteem. The idea was to engage these girls in some activities and to get them thinking about their identity, their relationships and their lives. Having suffered from low self-esteem when I was a teenager, I am passionate about helping teenage girls to have a more positive image of themselves. I overcame my insecurities by allowing God to show me who I was and what I meant to Him… this is my vision for these young girls too! Kelly was keen to work with this group of young people as she generally only works with teenagers who are getting into trouble a lot or who are at risk of offending. The girls we were choosing to focus on would more likely be the victims of bullying, those who get overlooked because they are quiet or those without friends or a social group. So we planned to run five sessions over January and February on Thursdays from 8.45 – 10.45 am and a trip somewhere at the end. The girls were selected by their heads of year to participate in the group and given the time off their lessons to come along.

I have since written a five week course which is designed to be used again in the future with other groups of girls. Each session takes a different focus; week one- My Feelings, week two- My Body, week three- My Image, week four- My Relationships and week five- My Life. During each session we have played games, done crafts, had discussions, watched film clips, taken photos, made face masks, created plasticine models, made collages and drawn posters! I have also been able to share with them some bits of my story and also a ‘thought for the day’ each week from the Bible, related to the topic, which I gave them printed onto business cards!!

  • Please pray that the girls keep these and read them again in the future!
  • Also pray that Kelly and the other two members of staff who have been taking part, Carol and Jackie, would take on board what it says in the Bible about these things.
  • Pray also that I am not prevented from sharing these Christian principles and messages.

One of the premises behind the group is to create an environment where the girls would feel safe and comfortable enough to be open and talk about themselves or things they are struggling with. This needs for Kelly and I as group leaders to be willing to offer opportunities for building relationships and giving love, support and advice... It has been clearly evident that this has happened during the course of this first girls’ group, as individuals have been able to open up and share with the group details of specific daily issues they are facing. One girl, ST lives in a care home and shared that she had recently been beaten up by another young person in the home. She was able to acknowledge how this has affected her negatively and for the first time ever, was speaking with people outside of the home about it! She has been able to meet with Kelly in school to discuss this further and there’s a real level of trust being developed between ST and us as leaders. Another principle of the group was for girls to know that they are not alone with their feelings of low self-esteem. All of the girls in the group have this in common and it has been a privilege to see them all becoming friends in the group and hearing about how they support each other outside of the group too. When I asked them what they liked most about Girls’ Group the most popular answer was “making friends”.

  • Please pray for me as I look to get a balance between leaving enough time for the girls to share their thoughts and feelings and providing them with practical things to do to help them learn- pray that I am sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s promptings of when to pursue a discussion and when to just spend time having fun with the girls.
  • Pray for each of the girls as follows; ST- that her level of trust in others will be built up by people who love and respect her, FR- that she is able to make positive and lasting friendships, SG- that she will come back to TGI Lates and form further relationships with people at Ebe, KK- that her parents will allow her to be a teenager and not be so controlling, GB- that she is able to control her emotions in a positive way, MR- that she doesn’t look to boys to give her an identity or to make herself feel good, SW- that her innocence is protected and she isn’t taken advantage of, CH- that she doesn’t hide behind her attitude to prevent people from getting close to her.

All of the sessions are now finished and we will be going on a trip to Pizza Hut after the February half term with the eight girls who have been regulars to the group. The girls have also requested that we continue to meet with them, so we will be holding a fortnightly, lunch time drop-in session for an hour on Thursdays and I plan to take along games, books and maybe some crafts for them to do, whilst having somewhere to just chill out and chat. I have also been asked to run the same five week course again, with a different group of girls and I have requested that some specific girls from TGI Lates come along to the next group, so watch this space!

  • Please pray that the Lord brings the right girls along to the next group.
  • Pray that the lunch club drop-in will enable me to have further discussions about my faith!

TGI Lates

Since beginning my intern year, I have also been involved as a volunteer at TGI Lates. I have been on quite a long prayer journey in relation to Lates over the last year and the Lord has shown me, in His perfect timing, that it is His will for me to be a part of the volunteer team. It seems that He has also placed this as a desire on the hearts of two or three other individuals within Ebe at around the same time. So this month has seen a small influx of new volunteers to TGI Lates. This has really encouraged me, as it confirms to me that God really wants to move amongst the young people at Lates and He is calling His servants to partner with Him in this task. The fact that He has asked me to be a part of this is thrilling! I am certain that the existing Lates team are also delighted that the Lord has been answering their prayers for more volunteers and that it has happened in such great timing.
  • Please give praises to God that He is working and acting on behalf of the young people at TGI Lates.
  • Pray that the Lates team will continue to be strengthened and encouraged by what they see happening and for a Godly sense of unity in prayer and in purpose.

One very exciting development amongst Lates young people has been the sight of four of the young girls coming to church on Sundays… they make their own way there, come of their own accord and have come regularly to three or four consecutive services now! These girls are also Orchard pupils, so the fact that they are entering their school on a Sunday really is quite amazing!! Two of these girls have also decided to come to Hill House Camps over the summer, which is a further opportunity for them to be in the presence of God and to meet with Him. I am pleased that I will be able to be at camp with them and that I can witness what I am expectant of the Lord doing in their lives. Ebe really is a foundation for them to experience being part of a church community and witnessing how we as Christians worship, pray and devote our lives to God and to each other. Let’s try and make them feel as at home as possible amongst us!
  • Pray for each of the girls coming to Ebe, that the Holy Spirit would place in them a hunger and thirst to know God and to discover a relationship with Him.
  • Pray for us as a church, that the Lord would give us a deep love for these girls, which invites them into His presence.

Last week, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to accompany a group of Lates young people to Laser Quest with three other adults. We took twelve young people, a mix of church and non-church, boys and girls, to spend the evening shooting lasers at each other with the hope of being crowned as top scorer! The Lates volunteer team thought it would be a great idea to show extravagant generosity to the young people by taking them out on a trip once in a while. The young people signed up to a specific activity and this was the first, very successful outing. These times are a great way for us to interact with the young people on a more one-to-one level as they have our, very focused attention for a whole evening!! There will be more of these outings happening in the following months and it would be great if there were willing volunteers from Ebe to drive and accompany groups of young people to one of these. Perhaps leave a comment on this post if you’re up for it!
  • Please pray that the leaders will be able to develop really meaningful conversations and relationships with individual young people.
  • Pray that there will be solid friendships built up between church and non-church young people, particularly through the outings.

That’s all for this month… lots more to come next month I’m sure! Love to you in Christ. xxx
